Our Home Grown Icon this week.......... Jazzie B

Trevor Beresford Romeo OBE, born on 26th January 1963 - better known by his stage name Jazzie B, is a British DJ, music producer and entrepreneur. He is a founding member of Soul II Soul.

He was born to parents of Antiguan descent in Hornsey, North London, the ninth of ten children, several of whom began running sound systems in the 1960s and 1970s. He had his first gig in 1977 working with friends under the name Jah Rico. He changed their working name to Soul II Soul in 1982. Soul II Soul was originally an umbrella name for several of Jazzie B's operations, including sound systems as well as the group itself. He was one of the leading DJ's in the foundation days of Kiss FM.

Jazzie has produced and remixed tracks for Incognito, Maxi Priest, James Brown, Kym Mazelle, Rose Windross, Cheryl Lynn, Teena Marie and many many others.

He had his own brand of clothing, all sold at his shop in Camden Town..

Jazzie is a founding director of the Featured Artists Coalition, hosts a regular show on BBC Radio, and is currently playing large summer festivals all around the world.

In 2008 he was awarded an OBE. His daughter Jessye is an actress. His son Mahlon Jesse is a professional footballer who plays right-back for Millwall FC..
