I’m trying to understand the concept of system software—how is it different from application software, and what are some common examples?

System software controls the basic functions of a computer. It acts as a bridge between the user, hardware, and application software.

System software is what runs the core functions of a computer. It includes the operating system, drivers, and utilities that help manage hardware and allow other programs to function. Unlike application software, we don’t usually interact with it directly—it works in the background to keep everything running smoothly. I recently came across the EU Omnibus Directive in a discussion about digital compliance, and it made me think about how even system software must now adapt to evolving legal standards.
